MH&B has a long history of work in legislative affairs and public policy advocacy, at both the state and national levels. MH&B lawyers represented individuals called before the U.S. House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy era in the 1950s and delegates seeking equal votes in presidential nominating conventions in the 1970s. Current MH&B lawyers continue this important tradition and have substantial experience presenting testimony and otherwise representing a variety of public policy interests. We have experience ranging from legal counsel to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee; legislative director and counsel for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; development director for a non-profit refugee advocacy organization; chapter chair and congressional liaison committee chair for the Washington Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association; steering committee member for the Initiative 502 (I-502) campaign to decriminalize and regulate marijuana in Washington; representative to the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board, legislative steering committee member of the Washington State Association for Justice, and chair of the legislative committee for the Washington Employment Lawyers Association. MHB lawyers have served in leadership positions of numerous state and national public policy organizations including as President of the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington.
